CULVER CITY, CALIF. (September 19, 2013) – Jared Hall, a 24-year-old graduate student in global policy at the University of Texas at Austin, won his fifth consecutive JEOPARDY! game in an episode that aired yesterday. Hall will attempt to add to his $161,001 payout against two new challengers on today’s episode of America’s Favorite Quiz Show®.
“Once you reach five wins, you enter the territory of JEOPARDY! legends,” said Hall. “Two wins could be a fluke, three wins is impressive, four wins is pretty remarkable, but five wins? That’s when it really sinks in that you’re doing something kind of special.”
In addition to his graduate work at U.T., Hall holds B.A. degrees in Political Science and Linguistics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He credits his educational background with much of his success during his run on JEOPARDY!
“Even dating back to middle school and high school, I was fortunate to take accelerated and Advanced Placement coursework, which prepared me for rigorous, fast-paced academic challenges,” said Hall. “During college, I watched a lot of JEOPARDY! and realized I could be successful on the show if I dedicated myself to a little preparation.”
Hall’s academic rigor paid off, as he surpassed $100,000 in winnings after his fourth win.
“I knew I had put up big single-game totals in my third and fourth games, but I didn’t realize how high my cumulative total was until after the game ended,” Hall said. “At that point, it was still surreal. I just knew I wanted to keep going, so I tried to keep my mind clear and stay as focused as possible.”
Hall plans to use his winnings to pay off his student loans, travel, and donate to charity.
“I just feel incredibly privileged to have had the opportunity to play a game that so many people enjoy so much,” said Hall. “Through some strange combination of luck and my own innate nerdiness, I was able to succeed beyond my wildest expectations. That’s a feeling I’ll never forget.”
